As the year draws to a close, we’d like to take a moment to thank you all for your continued support and shared passion for deer management and conservation - we hope you’ve enjoyed the first year of Deer Talk!
December is always a time to reflect on the successes and challenges of the past year while preparing for the busy months ahead. With winter truly settling in and the cull season well underway for us, there’s still plenty to keep us occupied as we head into January.
Reflecting On The Year:
2024 has been a year of change and growth for the deer stalking community. From increasing unpredictable weather changing deer behaviour to awareness of diseases such as, Bluetongue.
This year we've felt the deer stalking community has really come together more to tackle the challenges we face ahead. The Forestry Commission's conference, 'Managing deer across the English landscape', (hosted by Alastair Boston) in October was a real example of that. A whole host of industry professionals from the deer stalking world, land management and forestry sectors, coming together to help increase successful collaboration (on the whole) ensuring the continued success of deer management efforts - let's hope we have more of these events in 2025!
It’s also been encouraging to see more of the general public embracing venison as a healthy, sustainable food choice, boosting demand and supporting our industry.
As we wrap up 2024, we want to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Whether you’re out stalking in frosty woodlands or enjoying time with family, we hope the season brings you peace and fulfilment.
Looking Ahead: Exciting Plans for 2025:
As we move into the new year, we remain dedicated to delivering even more valuable deer management content. In 2025, we’ll be bringing back the podcast with a renewed focus on UK deer management, woodland stewardship, and the challenges facing conservation and modern deer stalking. Expect thought-provoking discussions with industry professionals and practical insights into the issues that matter most to our community.
We’re also excited to launch a dedicated resources/articles section on our website in January. This will dive deeper into specific deer management topics, offering a resource for stalkers, woodland managers, and conservationists alike. From technical advice to thought pieces, there will be plenty to explore and learn.
Our passion for sustainable deer and woodland management continues and we can’t wait to share these new initiatives with you in 2025!
Our Christmas film special, 'The Last Stag' has landed! Join us on an unforgettable journey into the Scottish highlands, where we experience the timeless art of Red Stag stalking on the truly special, Invercauld Estate. Witness the tradition of garron extraction, once central to Highland deer stalking practices, now fading in the shadow of modern Argo's & ATV's.
See you next year! Owen & Dan, Cervus-UK.
